What Is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a customized program of gentle exercises designed to improve how the muscles of the mouth and face work together. These muscles play a vital role in breathing, chewing, swallowing, speaking, and maintaining a healthy oral environment.

When oral muscles do not function properly, they can contribute to mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, orthodontic relapse, chronic gum inflammation, jaw tension, jaw tension and sleep-related concerns.

Signs You or Your Child May Benefit

Myofunctional therapy may be helpful if you or your child experiences:

  • Mouth breathing (day or night)
  • Tongue thrust or tongue resting against/between teeth
  • Open-mouth posture
  • Difficulty swallowing properly
  • Orthodontic relapse after braces or aligners
  • Chronic gum inflammation or bleeding
  • Clenching or grinding
  • Snoring or restless sleep
  • Speech or articulation concerns

A comprehensive evaluation can determine if oral muscle function is contributing to these concerns.

Dental Exams

Regular dental exams allow us to evaluate your teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health so we can catch concerns early.

Professional Cleanings

Cleanings help remove plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing alone cannot fully address.

Periodontal Evaluation

We evaluate the health of your gums to look for signs of inflammation, infection, bleeding, or periodontal disease.
