Non-Surgical Periodontics

What is Non-Surgical Periodontics?

Tooth loss is often associated with age, but with proper care, it is possible to keep your natural teeth for a lifetime. One of the ways we help protect your teeth is by focusing on the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is a progressive infection that begins when bacteria hide in plaque and tartar. Because this biofilm is colorless, it can be difficult to detect without a dental examination. Subtle symptoms like persistent bad breath and bleeding when you brush may be early signs that it is time to have your gums evaluated.

Many people brush and floss every day but still struggle with oral bacteria and periodontal infection. Genetics, diet, overall health, and the natural oral environment can all play a role in gum disease risk.

How We Approach Gum Health

At the Maine Center for Dental Medicine, we take a multi-faceted approach to diagnosing and treating periodontal disease. We understand the harmful effect gum disease can have on teeth and overall wellness, which is why our care focuses on both the mouth and the health of the surrounding tissues.

Evaluation

We begin with a detailed evaluation of your gums, oral history, and periodontal health to understand the source and severity of the problem.

Bacterial Testing

We examine the bacteria present in the mouth so we can better understand the type and amount of bacteria contributing to infection.

Non-Surgical Therapy

Treatment may include quadrant scaling, hygiene procedures, and tartar removal from tooth and root surfaces.

Biologic Support

Our approach may include antimicrobial support, nutrition guidance, and natural supplements designed to support immune health and tissue healing.

The Danger of Gum Disease

Gum disease does more than affect the gums. When unhealthy bacteria accumulate beneath the gumline, they weaken gum tissue around the teeth and create periodontal pockets. As bacteria continue to build up, bone tissue can begin to break down over time.

Eventually, this degeneration may cause teeth to loosen. Research has also linked periodontal disease with broader health concerns including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and other systemic conditions.

Our goal is to identify gum disease early, reduce harmful bacteria, and help patients protect both their oral health and overall wellness.
